Skylar, Beth, Carly, Declan, and Parker are young missionaries at an evangelical church in a southern Ontario town. As they gear up for their summer mission trip to Sierra Leone, Skylar reveals a secret that permanently alter the group’s dynamic: during her year away at university in the city, she had premarital sex with a boy from one of her classes. With this revelation, group leader Beth gives Skylar an ultimatum: confess her sin to the church pastor and her father and beg for forgiveness, or she gives up her spot on the mission trip. Unwilling to budge or believe that she acted in the wrong, Skylar remains steadfast in her belief that having sex with a person she cares about is not wrong. But this feud only stirs up uncertainty in the other members' own feelings about the ethics of abstinence, alongside a dark secret of the church's executive team.

The Magdalene unzips the ethics of sex to explore: Is it wrong to want to be desired? Are we defined by our beliefs? and, How do we draw the lines of our own morality?
