OUR VALUES
1. Work that Challenges, Provokes,and Engages in Social Issues
To make art of any kind is to be socially engaged and political. Stagepunk doesn't shy away from that. We lean into it. We value creating, developing, and showcasing work that explores complex, delicate, and important social issues that are relevant to our time. We want our performance spark conversation around these issues and, hopefully, inspire change through our work.
2. Do-It-Yourself Ethic
With our roots in punk culture, we strive to maintain a DIY-or-Die ethic in all of our creation. That doesn't mean we don't collaborate with our community or other artists. Instead, it means we don't rely on large corporations or institutions to get our work done. We do it ourselves. In backyards, on kitchen floors, with whatever resources we have available.
3. Sustainable Creation Practices
Theatre can be an incredibly wasteful artform. Especially with large productions. Stagepunk strives to limit physical waste in our productions wherever possible by using repurposed and recycled materials, prioritizing environmentally-friendly materials, and limiting our consumption of electricity, fuel, and clean water.
4. Physical Media
So much media in the arts has become completely digital in recent years. Stagepunk will always provide and invest in high-quality, physical programs for all of our performances. And, beyond that, we will continue to publish and produce other physical, print media including zines, art prints, show posters, and our annual Stagepunk Magazine.
5. Audience-Involved Performance
It's easy to draw a line between the audience and the show. And sometimes it's necessary. Stagepunk values to welcome the audience into performances and the creation process through interactive elements in staged productions as well as engaged feedback at our development workshops and readings.
